Before installing your floor, there are some necessary
and helpful things you can do to ensure a smooth, hassle-free installation.

First, before purchasing your supplies, you must calculate the square footage of your project. The easiest way to calculate this is by measuring both the length of your room and the width, and multiplying these two numbers together. This gives you a rough estimate of how large a space you will be tiling.

After determining the square footage of your project, you’re ready to go purchase supplies. With measurements in hand, pay a visit to your local tile distributor. Pick out your tile. Remember to allow about 10-15% extra when purchasing your tile to allow for breakage, cutting and scrap. After choosing your tile, your distributor will be able to help you calculate how much thin set, grout and other supplies you will need to complete your project. Make sure you have all of your tools and other items you need to ensure proper tile installation at this time.

Now, that you’ve picked out your tile and have your tools and setting supplies, you’re ready to start your installation!

Step
Clean and prepare the floor surface.
Remove loose paint or other debris with a scraper and clean water. Make sure there is no surface oil or grease, and the surface is completely dry.

Step

Lay out tile for measurement.

This is a critical step. Lay out 6 full tiles in a row, using the recommended spacers in between each tile. Measure this unit of tile and spacers end to end. Take this measurement, and divide by 3. This number is your accurate 2-tile measurement.

Distance from point a to point b = 36"
This number is then divided to achieve your accurate measurement: 36" ÷ 3 = 12"

Step Now that you have the correct 2-tile measurement for an accurate layout, go to your longest wall. At one end, measure out from the wall the measurement you got from step two and mark it. Do the same on the other end of the wall. Now snap a chalk line on the floor to draw a line between the two points.

Step Repeat this process on the longest adjacent wall.

Snap two chalk lines along adjacent walls

Step After snapping the second chalk line, place a 2’ square in the corner created by the two intersecting lines. If your lines form a square, continue on to the next step. If they do not, repeat the above steps until you have formed a perfect square with the two intersecting lines.

Continue only if you have a perfect square formed by the first two chalk lines. Measure out from your initial chalk line the same equal measurement you obtained from the previous step; mark a chalk line. Continue measuring out and marking the same distance, until your floor is completely marked, forming a perfect grid. 4 tiles and grout joints should fit within each square.

Now that your layout is complete, you can begin the actual tile installation.
