Standard Installation Grout Installation Diagonal Installation

For preparation and other tips for a standard installation, go here.

After measuring the floor area, purchasing your supplies and preparing the floor surface, you’re ready to begin the layout, just as in standard installation.

Step
Clean and prepare the floor surface, the same as in a standard installation.
Remove loose paint or other debris with a scraper and clean water. Make sure there is no surface oil or grease, and the surface is completely dry.

Step

Lay out tile for measurement.

This is a critical step. Lay out 3 full tiles in 2 rows, using the recommended spacers in between each tile, so that you have a block of 6 tiles. Measure this unit of tile diagonally with the spacers end to end. Take this measurement, and divide by 3. This number is your accurate diagonal 2-tile measurement.

Distance = 36"
36" ÷ 3 = 12"

Step Now that you have the correct diagonal 2-tile measurement for an accurate layout, go to your longest wall. At one end, measure out from the wall the measurement you got from step two and mark it, exactly as you would during a standard installation. Do the same on the other end of the wall. Now snap a chalk line on the floor to draw a line between the two points.

Step Repeat this process on the longest adjacent wall.

Snap two chalk lines along adjacent walls

Step After snapping the second chalk line, place a 2’ square in the corner created by the two intersecting lines. If your lines form a square, continue on to the next step. If they do not, repeat the above steps until you have formed a perfect square with the two intersecting lines.

Continue only if you have a perfect square formed by the first two chalk lines. Measure out from your initial chalk line the same equal measurement you obtained from the previous step; mark a chalk line. Continue measuring out and marking the same distance, until your floor is completely marked, forming a perfect grid. 4 tiles and grout joints should fit within each square.

After your floor is measured and marked in a straight grid pattern, just as you would for your standard installation, you must make one extra step.

To create the diagonal, snap an additional series of chalk lines in a different colour, bisecting each square in half, to form the diagonal.

Now that your layout is complete, you can begin the actual tile installation.
